Cruise holidays are usually a chance to shake off any worries and set sail on a new adventure. However, there are a few easily-made mistakes that could make your holiday much more stressful than expected. But don’t worry. Mike Graham, cruise expert at Destination2, is here to explain how to avoid the worst first-time mistakes. The cruise pro says: ‘One of the biggest mistakes first-time cruisers make is overpacking. While it’s tempting to prepare for every possible scenario, you definitely won’t need six formal outfits. ‘Cruise ships are getting more casual, so stick to versatile pieces. Trust me, you’ll spend more time in your swimwear or comfy clothes than in that tuxedo you thought you’d need.’ Cruise cabins are often on the smaller side so it’s best to leave any unnecessary clothing in the wardrobe at home. Another big mistake often made by first-time guests is ‘ignoring the daily planner’, says Mike. A cruise expert has explained how to avoid the most common first-time mistakes, including one that will really annoy the crew (stock image) Mike explains how passengers can make sure they enjoy the ‘freshest’ food at the buffetThe expert explains: ‘The ship’s itinerary is filled with activities, from salsa lessons to cooking demos – it’s a way to ensure you don’t miss out on something fun you’d enjoy. ‘Make sure to research what your cruise ship has to offer before you board. Many cruise lines recommend booking shore excursions, dining reservations and spa treatments in advance. ‘They often provide an app or personalised planner to help you with this and it’s a good idea to take advantage of it, as popular experiences can fill up quickly.’ While forgetting to check the ship’s planner could see guests miss out on a fun activity, a few other offences could even upset the crew. Mike reveals: ‘Sunbed hogging is one of the biggest offences – don’t be that person! Leaving your towel on a sunbed all day not only frustrates other guests, but also the crew. Be considerate and only a claim a spot when you plan to use it.’ On some cruise ships, staff will remove passengers’ items from a sunbed if they’re left unattended for over an hour. But that’s not the only way cruise holidaymakers can frustrate the crew. ‘Another issue that can irritate cruise staff is being the last one to leave,’ says Mike. ‘Whether it’s at the buffet, dining room or group activities, lingering after an event ends can hold up the crew’s efforts to clean and prepare for the next round. Keeping an eye on timing helps everything run smoothly and ensures everyone has a great experience.’ Mike reveals: ‘Sunbed hogging is one of the biggest offences – don’t be that person!’ ‘Another hack is not to be afraid to ask the staff when certain dishes are freshly made or coming out,’ says Mike
And when it comes to the buffet, Mike has also shared some top advice to ensure passengers get the ‘freshest selection’ of food. The expert claims: ‘One of the most common buffet mistakes first-timers make is arriving at peak hours, usually right after the ship’s excursions return or during standard dining times. ‘If you want to skip the crowds and get the freshest selection, try to hit the buffet right after it opens or right before closing.’Another hack is not to be afraid to ask the staff when certain dishes are freshly made or coming out. They’re often happy to share tips on when the best options will be available, so you can swoop in before they disappear.’Remember it’s a cruise, not a race. There’s no need to grab everything in sight. The food isn’t going anywhere, there will be plenty of time for second or third servings.’
