“The White Lotus” creator Mike White is firing back at Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, the show’s composer who told The New York Times earlier this month that he will not return for Season 4 due to the creative differences he had with White while working on the third season.

“I honestly don’t know what happened, except now I’m reading his interviews because he decides to do some PR campaign about him leaving the show,” White said during a “Howard Stern Show” interview. “I don’t think he respected me. He wants people to know that he’s edgy and dark and I’m, I don’t know, like I watch reality TV. We never really even fought. He says we feuded. I don’t think I ever had a fight with him — except for maybe some emails. It was basically me giving him notes. I don’t think he liked to go through the process of getting notes from me, or wanting revisions, because he didn’t respect me. I knew he wasn’t a team player and that he wanted to do it his way. I was thrown that he would go to The New York Times to shit on me and the show three days before the finale. It was kind of a bitch move.”

Tapia de Veer told The Times that he and White did not see eye to eye on “The White Lotus” Season 3 theme. The music White wanted stripped the music of its traditional “ooh-loo-loo-loos,” which became a staple of Tapia de Veer’s work on “The White Lotus” during its first two seasons. The composer said that for Season 3 the creator wanted more “background music … a song that is more like something you would listen to in Ibiza, in some clubby place with a chill, sexy vibe.”

“I texted the producer and I told him that it would be great to, at some point, give them the longer version with the ooh-loo-loo-loos, because people will explode if they realize that it was going there anyway,” Tapia de Veer added. “He thought it was a good idea. But then Mike cut that — he wasn’t happy about that. I mean, at that point, we already had our last fight forever, I think. So he was just saying no to anything.”

Tapia de Veer has won Emmys for his work on “The White Lotus” but said he is done with the show and will not come back for Season 4. White said on “The Howard Stern Show” the composer “didn’t want to go through the process with me” and “didn’t want to go to sessions” during the making of the third season, adding: “He would always look at me with this contemptuous smirk on his face like he thought I was a chimp or something … he’s definitely making a big deal out of a creative difference of opinion.”

“He is very talented,” White added. “[But] I’ve never kissed somebody’s ass so hard to just get him to — to lead that horse to water. Have fun with whatever you’re doing next.”

White is known to be outspoken when it comes to his critics. He appeared on the official “White Lotus” podcast after the Season 3 finale aired and told off viewers who complained the new episodes were too slow and boring.

“I’m world-building,” White said. “If you don’t want to go to bed with me then get out of my bed. I’m edging you! Enjoy the edging. If you don’t want to be edged, then get out of my bed. Do you know what I mean? Don’t be a bossy bottom. Get the fuck out of my bed. Don’t come home with me. Don’t get naked in my bed. Get the fuck out of my bed. Obviously something is going to happen.”

White noted on “The Howard Stern Show” that he is “renegotiating” his contract right now ahead of Season 4. Variety reported earlier this year that “White Lotus” would return for a fourth season.
