Now, Schoen and Daboll are under immense pressure to turn things around. That starts by sorting out the play they get from the quarterback, which they blame for undermining their efforts in 2024.They’ve added Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency, so they’re covered for stopgaps, but the team still has no clear future at the position. Securing that future could and probably should be this regime’s top priority in the upcoming draft.Scouting the decision-makersSchoen bounced back from a pair of uninspiring drafts in 2022 and 2023 with a strong 2024 class. Malik Nabers looks like a future superstar at wide receiver, while safety Tyler Nubin and nickel cornerback Dru Phillips could be building blocks for a young defense. Schoen even found a talented running back in Tyrone Tracy Jr. in the fifth round, while fourth-round tight end Theo Johnson showed some promise last season. To get this franchise heading in the right direction, Schoen needs another draft like last year’s.• The Giants’ 2024 NFL Draft classGiants’ key free-agent signings• CB Paulson Adebo: Three-year, $54 million deal• S Jevon Holland: Three-year, $45.3 million deal• WR Darius Slayton: Three-year, $36 million deal• Edge Chauncey Golston: Three-year, $18 million deal• QB Russell Wilson: One-year, $10.5 million deal• QB Jameis Winston: Two-year, $8 million deal• RG Greg Van Roten: One-year, $4 million deal• Giants’ 2025 free-agency trackerGiants’ key positions of needQuarterback: New York now has a pair of veteran QBs capable of starting as they enter the draft. However, the modest short-term commitments to Wilson and Winston shouldn’t affect the Giants’ draft plans. They still need to secure a long-term answer at the position. Assuming Miami’s Cam Ward isn’t there, this could come down to their evaluation of Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. If they view him as a franchise QB, they should take him with the third pick. Sanders could then sit behind the veterans until he’s ready. If they don’t see him that way, they should still try to add a QB later in the draft.Defensive line: The Giants secured some veteran depth (Roy Robertson-Harris, Jeremiah Ledbetter) in free agency, so they should have a better defensive line rotation behind Dexter Lawrence, but they’re still lacking an impact player to line up next to Lawrence. The All-Pro is at his best when he’s playing alongside another quality defensive lineman, so expect the Giants to try to find a player who can fill that role on Day 2.Right guard: Re-signing the 35-year-old Van Roten wasn’t Plan A for the Giants this offseason. It was a pivot after pursuing the top guard on the market, Will Fries, who signed a five-year, $87.7 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings. With that in mind, don’t be surprised if the Giants try to upgrade the position in the draft. Again, that could come on Day 2 when the Giants have an extra pick.Giants’ draft analysis• Giants mock draft simulations: Exploring some great (and terrible) scenarios for NY• Giants mock draft analysis: What would Abdul Carter mean for Kayvon Thibodeaux’s future?• Giants GM Joe Schoen: Drafting a QB ‘not mandatory.
