Director Coyote Peterson, the Emmy-winning host of the “Brave Wilderness” YouTube channel, has assembled an all-star team of wildlife experts for a forensic retelling of the life-threatening bear attack that college wrestlers Kendell Cummings, Brady Lowry, Orrin Jackson and August Harrison survived near Cody, Wyo. in Oct. 2022.
BAFTA and Emmy-winner Bear Grylls of The Natural Studios (“Running Wild with Bear Grylls,” “Man Vs. Wild,” “You Vs. Wild”) and Casey Anderson of Vision Hawk Films (“Expedition Wild,” “America the Wild”) are serving as wilderness experts, with Peterson and Anderson also starring in the film as co-hosts. The Natural Studios is set to introduce the film to buyers.
Currently in post-production, “That Bear Kid” is scheduled for festival submission in early 2025. The film is a co-production between Peterson’s Brave Wilderness and Brevity Films, led by Roland Kassis and Alyssa Schroeter. Additionally, the doc is produced by Ita Kennedy (“The Amazing Race”) and Beau Sedivy (“Brave Wilderness”).
While there have been many villainous portrayals of bears in media throughout the years, “That Bear Kid” takes a deeper look at how human-wildlife conflict is much more complex, especially as national park popularity continues to rise.
“Nature can be brutal if its limits are tested, and even deadly if pushed too far,” says Peterson. “A goal of ‘That Bear Kid’ is to help debunk negative connotations and strengthen conservation efforts for animals that are often misunderstood.”
“When Coyote Peterson says, ‘You need to hear this story and I need to direct it,’ the decision for Brevity to partner with Brave Wilderness and Bear Grylls was a no brainer,” say Kassis and Schroeter. “Not only were we struck by the courage and self-awareness of these young men, but we also love the conservation work Brave Wilderness has accomplished by making wildlife content exciting and accessible to audiences worldwide. We’re excited to see them apply the same ethos to ‘That Bear Kid.’”
As an executive on the project, famed survival expert Grylls said, “This film not only captures the raw, unyielding spirit of human survival but also highlights the intricate dance between humans and wildlife. Our goal is to reshape perceptions, emphasize the nobility of these creatures and deepen the conversation around conservation and coexistence. Coyote, Casey and the team have done a phenomenal job, and I believe this film will leave a lasting impact on all who see it.”
Executive Producers include Kassis and Schroeter for Brevity Films, Beau Sedivy and Ita Kennedy for Peterson’s Brave Wilderness, Grylls and Delbert Shoopman for The Natural Studios and Anderson for Vision Hawk Films.
