Pierce Brosnan admitted to People magazine that Hellen Mirren wasn’t entirely wrong to call out the James Bond franchise for its “profound sexism.” Brosnan played 007 in four movies released between 1995 and 2002. Mirren recently spoke to The Standard and went viral for saying she “never liked” the Bond franchise because of “the way women were” treated in it.

“She let them have it,” Brosnan said of Mirren’s interview, while adding the two have never talked about 007 together. “Yes, there’s a certain agreement there. But there’s a certain world and room to move within the proscenium arch of what [Bond creator and author] Ian Fleming put down. So there’s always going to be conflict.”

Mirren also spoke out against recasting James Bond with a female actor and said Hollywood should just make original movies about female spies instead, an opinion also recently shared by “No Time to Die” star Ana de Armas (“Let James be James and John Wick be John Wick. We’ll do our thing,” she told Variety at CinemaCon).

“The whole concept of James Bond is drenched and born out of profound sexism,” Mirren saod. “Women have always been a major and incredibly important part of the Secret Service, they always have been. And very brave. If you hear about what women did in the French Resistance, they’re amazingly, unbelievably courageous. So I would tell real stories about extraordinary women who’ve worked in that world.”

Brosnan’s tenure as 007 ended with 2002’s “Die Another Day,” but he recently said on “Today” that he thinks he “could get away with” coming back by if the Bond franchise ever wanted to center on an older version of the famous spy. The actor said he would return “in a pinch.”

“Let’s see where the wind takes us. Let’s see what happens. They know where to find me,” Brosnan added. “Why not. I mean, there’s great things you can do with AI as well, so there you have it. I’m quite content the way it is.”

Amazon MGM now has creative control of the Bond franchise and has promised a “fresh, exotic new” chapter for the long-running franchise.
