Samsung Electronics is making a major play in the U.K. virtual production space, unveiling a partnership with the venerable Twickenham Film Studios and VP specialists Quite Brilliant to create one of the largest permanent LED display sound stages in Britain.

The facility, to be housed at Twickenham’s historic Stage 3, will feature a massive 24 x 4.5 meter back wall, 105 square meter LED ceiling, and additional mobile LED totem walls, complete with a permanent turntable and motion control crane. The installation is scheduled for completion by the end of June this year.

The installation represents Samsung’s first major LED screen build in the U.K. and only its third globally, after Paju, Korea and Paris, France. The new U.K. facility will utilize Samsung’s latest IVC 2.1 pixel pitch technology and ARRI color calibration management system. The ultra-large LED wall creates virtual environments that can be integrated with real-time visual effects technology, providing filmmakers with new creative possibilities.

Samsung’s Wall for Virtual Production includes technical innovations like 3D lookup tables for color correction, wide-gamut HDR color processing, and color adjustment capabilities. The system features an improved 4:9 ratio, 12,288 Hz refresh rate, Black Seal Technology+ for enhanced black levels, and 20-bit processing for precise color mapping.

The partnership also establishes a Samsung base at Twickenham, which is renowned for its Oscar-winning post-production department. With virtual production growing in importance throughout the industry, this collaboration positions both companies at the forefront of new production technologies in the U.K. market.

“As one of the world’s leaders in picture quality and screen technology, we are excited about the possibilities of how this could transform Virtual Production,” said Deborah Honig, VP, chief customer officer at Samsung Electronics. “This technology opens the door to limitless potential for filmmakers, producers and content creators from various industries by amplifying digital effects, while making virtual content creation easier, faster and more cost effective.”

Kenneth Branagh, who has called Twickenham home for the past five years, added: “I love being based here. Their talented team are always committed to delivering the very best. This great partnership with Samsung reinforces Twickenham’s position for the future as a vital part of the British film industry.”

For Twickenham owner Sunny Vohra, the partnership represents an important new chapter for the historic studio, which he acquired in 2012: “This new venture marks the next phase of our multi-year strategy to invest in Twickenham’s future. Samsung is our ideal partner. They see the value of our world-class award-winning team and appreciate our approach in balancing investment in technology with investment in our people.”

Quite Brilliant, winners of the 2023 Advertising Producers’ Association ‘Best use of Virtual Production’ award, bring significant expertise to the project. The company’s managing director Chris Chaundler underscored the collaborative design process: “With five years and more than 200 VP projects under our belt, we have designed the stage, in partnership with Samsung to meet the needs of producers and directors. This is designed by filmmakers for filmmakers.”

Russell Shaw, Quite Brilliant’s head of virtual production, added that the stage will accommodate projects across the entertainment spectrum: “The stage will service all projects from features and television to advertising and social content. This is a bold statement about Twickenham’s commitment to the future of film making, supporting the U.K. film, television and media industry and embracing new technologies.”
