Taiwan industry icon Sylvia Chang will receive the Golden Mulberry lifetime achievement award at the 27th Far East Film Festival, which has set Chinese comedy “Green Wave” as its opening film.

The Far East Film Festival is set to once again transform the Italian city of Udine into a vibrant Asian cultural hub with its most expansive edition yet, showcasing 75 titles from 11 countries, including 7 world premieres, 15 international premieres, 20 European premieres, and 19 Italian premieres.

This year’s lineup specifically examines “time and society through cinema,” with selections that reflect current Asian social phenomena. The opening film, Chinese comedy “Green Wave” from director Xu Lei, explores the “tangping” movement (young people metaphorically “lying down” in rejection of ultra-competitive career paths), while films like “Upstream” address the gig economy. Female directors Yihui Shao and Yin Lichuan bring stories of gender equality with “Her Story” and “Like a Rolling Stone.”

Japan’s “Teki Cometh” takes a Lynchian approach to the nation’s aging population crisis, while the Philippines’ “Sunshine” confronts the criminalization of abortion. From Thailand comes “The Stone,” a debut feature examining authenticity and value through the lens of the amulet market.

Chang, whose multifaceted career as an actor, singer, director, screenwriter and producer began as a DJ and singer in Taiwan during the 1970s before transitioning to film, will present her family drama “Daughter’s Daughter” at the festival. Fans can also catch her in Tsui Hark’s restored classic “Shanghai Blues.”

The restored classics section features several notable treasures, including the European premiere of “Barking Dogs Never Bite,” the directorial debut of Oscar winner Bong Joon Ho, Filipino drama “Bona” by Lino Brocka, and Johnnie To‘s masterpiece “PTU.” The festival has also renewed its collaboration with the Taipei Archive (Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute) to present a three-film tribute to director Pai Ching-jui, who studied at Italy’s Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome in 1961, where he immersed himself in Italian cinema and neorealism.

The festival’s retrospective, “Yokai and Other Monsters: From Asian Folklore to Cinema,” will present 12 films featuring bizarre and disturbing creatures from various Asian mythologies, from Japanese yokai to the Philippines’ Mananang-gal.

Beyond screenings, FEFF 27 will feature a program of cultural events, including the first Italian anthological exhibition of legendary manga creator Shigeru Mizuki at Udine’s Casa Cavazzini Museum. “Mondo Mizuki, Mondo Yokai” will showcase 100 original artworks, many exhibited outside Japan for the first time.

Industry activities continue to expand with Focus Asia, now in its tenth edition. The market section will welcome over 200 industry professionals from Europe, Asia, and the Americas, with the MiC (Italy’s Ministry of Culture) confirmed as the main supporter, along with partnership from the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes.

For public entertainment, FEFF will transform Udine with over 100 events including a Far East market, K-Pop contest, Cosplay competition, and various parties including the Pink Night featuring Taiwanese artist Betty Apple.

The 27th edition will conclude with “Ya Boy Kongming! The Movie,” a live-action adaptation of a popular manga.

The Far East Film Festival runs April 24 to May 2.
