Benicio del Toro and Mia Threapleton portray a complex father-daughter duo in the trailer for “The Phoenician Scheme,” Wes Anderson‘s latest feature.
Del Toro plays business magnate Zsa-zsa Korda, one of the richest men in Europe. Threapleton stars as his daughter, a nun named Sister Liesel, with Michael Cera as her tutor Bjorn Lund. The film also features Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Riz Ahmed, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Mathieu Amalric, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis and Benedict Cumberbatch.
“The Phoenician Scheme” was shot in Germany. Anderson co-wrote the story with Roman Coppola, and Alexandre Desplat composed the score.
Anderson’s most recent features were 2023’s “Asteroid City” and 2021’s “The French Dispatch,” and he won his first Oscar for the short film, “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” in 2024.
Anderson produced the film via American Empirical Pictures, with Jeremy Dawson and John Peet, as well as Steven Rales via Indian Paintbrush. Focus Features distributes the film and was previously behind the distribution of Anderson’s “Asteroid City” and “Moonrise Kingdom.”
Anderson is known for a consistent and specific visual style across his filmography, but the filmmaker commented in 2023 that “the one thing I never think about, really, when I’m making a film is myself or my own style, my voice.”
“I think about what’s new for this movie, how do I make this movie the best it can be, how do I get the greatest collaborators together,” Anderson continued. “And yet every time I make a movie, the first thing people say is: ‘You can sure tell who made this one!’”
The film will have a limited release May 30 and expand wider June 6.
