Tom Hanks is a father of four.
The “Cast Away” actor and his late ex-wife, Samantha Lewes, shared son Colin Hanks and daughter Elizabeth Ann “E.A.” Hanks.
Tom also shares two sons — Chester “Chet” Hanks and Truman Hanks — with his current wife, Rita Wilson.
The “Toy Story” voice actor admitted in 2024 that he has made “every mistake” as a father.
“You know, you scar the kids somehow in the same exact way. And as they get older, you come back around and [say], ‘Hey, can I talk about what a knothead I was with you for all those years?’” he said while appearing on Jay Shetty’s podcast
Here’s everything to know about Tom’s three sons and daughter.
Colin Hanks
Tom and Lewes welcomed Colin, their first child, on Nov. 24, 1977 — a year before the duo tied the knot.
Colin followed in his father’s footsteps by pursuing a career in Hollywood.
He is known for his roles in the 2002 movie “Orange County,” the 2005 action film “King Kong,” and the 2008 romantic comedy “The House Bunny.”
Colin has also starred in several television shows including roles in “Band of Brothers” and “Roswell.”
The younger doppelgänger of his dad has been recognized for his acting skills, having been nominated for an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice Award for his role in the FX crime series, “Fargo.”
As for his personal life, Colin has been married to Samantha Bryant since 2010. He and the publicist share two children: Olivia Jane, born in 2011, and Charlotte Bryant, born in 2013.
Outside of his film aspirations, Colin has a side gig in fashion as he launched a handkerchief line cleverly called Hanks Kerchiefs.
Elizabeth Ann ‘E.A.’ Hanks
Tom and Lewes welcomed daughter Elizabeth Ann five years after their first child on May 17, 1982.
Unfortunately, Tom and Lewes separated in 1985 and finalized their divorce two years later. Lewes went on to get primary custody of Elizabeth and Colin until the agreement flipped in their teenage years.
Elizabeth joined Hollywood as a child — starring in her dad’s 1994 film, “Forrest Gump.” From there, she went on to appear in her dad’s project, “That Thing You Do!” as well as the 2015 short film, “Anchorage.”
The only daughter of the Oscar winner distanced herself from Hollywood in her later years after graduating from Vassar College.
She has since pursued a writing career under the pen name E.A. Hanks with her essays appearing in Time magazine, the Guardian, the New York Times and the Huffington Post.
E.A. opened up about her rocky childhood in her memoir, “The 10: A Memoir of Family And The Open Road.”
“Eventually a divorce agreement was settled, and I would visit my dad and stepmother (and soon enough my younger half brothers) on the weekends and during summers, but from 5 to 14, years filled with confusion, violence, deprivation, and love, I was a Sacramento girl,” she wrote.
“I lived in a white house with columns, a backyard with a pool, and a bedroom with pictures of horses plastered on every wall.”
Things went south when her mother’s mental health began to decline.
“The backyard became so full of dog s—t that you couldn’t walk around it, the house stank of smoke,” she wrote. “The fridge was bare or full of expired food more often than not, and my mother spent more and more time in her big four-poster bed, poring over the Bible.”
E.A. recalled her mother’s “emotional violence” becoming “physical violence” and she moved back to LA to be in her father’s custody when she was in the seventh grade.
“My senior year of high school, she called to say she was dying,” she wrote in the excerpt of her mom.
Lewes, whose real name was Susan Dillingham, died in 2002 from lung cancer. She was 49.
Chester ‘Chet’ Hanks
Tom married Wilson in 1988 and they welcomed their first son together, Chester “Chet,” two years later on Aug. 4, 1990.
Chet began using the stage name Chet Haze while pursuing a music career when he was a student at Northwestern University.
Like his dad and two older siblings, Chet also went on to chase his Hollywood dreams.
He has had recurring roles in shows like “Empire,” “Shameless” and “Your Honor” and also guest-starred in “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Atlanta.”
Chet struggled with substance abuse issues since he was 16 and entered rehab in 2014 after hitting “rock bottom” due to his cocaine addiction.
He decided to get sober for his daughter Michaiah Hanks, whom he shares with his ex-partner Tiffany Miles.
“I do have a daughter, she’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me, she’s the reason why I turned my life around and got sober,” he shared in 2016.
Since getting sober, he has turned his life around and even starred in the 2025 Netflix hit, “Running Point,” starring Kate Hudson. Chet told Page Six that Tom gave him acting tips for the role.
Chet opened up about being raised by famous parents in a 2022 YouTube video.
“I’m very privileged, but I wasn’t spoiled,” he shared at the time. “My parents didn’t spoil me; I was never just given money or an allowance. I had to work and earn everything that I’ve made, and it’s been that way for my entire life.”
Truman Hanks
Tom and Wilson welcomed their youngest child, Truman, on Dec. 26, 1995.
The youngest Hanks sibling graduated from Stanford University in 2018 and has remained relatively out of the spotlight.
Truman has gotten involved in showbiz on the production side for the 2021 movies “West Side Story,” and “Black Widow” as well as the 2017 Netflix series, “Atypical.”
He also played the younger version of Tom’s character in the 2022 film “A Man Called Otto,” which was produced by his mother.
Truman keeps his personal life quite private, though he did walk the red carpet with his parents and Chet at the premiere of Apple TV+’s “Masters of the Air” in 2024.
