The Pitt Episode 14 “8 PM” features a sequence where two doctors in the MAX show attempt a radical new procedure to save the life of one of the PittFest shooting’s biggest heroes. Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy) encourages Dr. Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) to use a pigtail catheter to aspirate air that’s gotten caught in an injured patient’s heart. It’s a risky procedure that pushes Dr. Mohan, aka “Slo Mo,” out of her comfort zone. More intriguingly, there could also be a “flirtation” brewing between these two doctors, per The Pitt star Shawn Hatosy…
**Spoilers for The Pitt Episode 14 “8 PM,” now streaming on MAX**
The last few episodes of The Pitt have dealt with the horrific fallout of a mass casualty event. One of the last cars to arrive in PTMH’s triage zone is driving by a Good Samaritan who was shot in the leg, but continued to run around the venue to save those worse off than him. All that running has put oxygen in his body and that air has wound up in his heart. While Primary Surgery Dr. Emery Walsh (Tedra Millan) wants Abbot and Mohan to pass the case along to another department, Abbot offers a different solution via a South Korean case study.
“I mean, fun fact about that procedure. There’s only one recorded instance of it in the world. There’s one paper on it from South Korea,” The Pitt star Supriya Ganesh told DECIDER. “That was so cool to me because I was like, ‘Is this going to influence, like, whether this procedure is done more often?’ Like, you know, life being influenced by art?”
Despite Walsh’s protestations, Abbot calmly coaches Mohan through the procedure, ultimately resulting in success. Dr. Mohan is able to aspirate the air out of the patient’s heart all while conquering her own self doubt.
“I love that scene, because I think Mohan’s big challenge is that she tends to hesitate and she tends to want to do things the right way, and she isn’t really as much of a renegade as some of the other doctors are, right?” Ganesh said. “I think this is her really taking the reins, as scary as it is for her, and realizing she can do some badass stuff. She can run a trauma if she absolutely needs to.”
Dr. Abbot then has to convince Dr. Mohan to take credit for the incredible save. Once she does, however, he cheekily says it was too risky for him to try. “What?” a dazed Dr. Mohan replies.
So what was all that about? Was it really too risky for the literally battle-tested Abbot?
“I think it’s a number of things,” Shawn Hatosy told DECIDER. “First of all, I think Abbot has tremendous respect for Dr. Mohan. I think he sees her as one of the smartest people in there.”
“There’s been talk of her history being too slow, this kind of thing. I think it’s just a way for him to push her into a situation where she might not be comfortable in, but he knows she can do it.”
Then Hatosy revealed his second, far juicier, interpretation of the encounter. “And then, B, it’s like, it’s almost this weird — I love the scene, and I don’t mean it in like a creepy way, but it’s just a sort of a flirtation because of this respect that he has for her.”
While that scene alone might not be enough to get the Abbot/Mohan ship a-sailing in the fandom, DECIDER then noticed that the two characters do share a lot of scenes in the PittFest fallout. Furthermore, many of Abbot’s most impressive moves, be it donating blood in the middle of the madness or even pulling out a military-grade crike kit, are, uh, in front of Dr. Mohan?
“Yeah, I mean, Shawn was so fun to play with in that scene,” Ganesh said of Episode 14’s pigtail sequence. “I remember they did my coverage first for that. I’m trying to do it as accurately as possible. I just remember I was so nervous about getting it right, like, it felt like my heart was in my throat. And [episode director] John Cameron came up to me and was like, ‘I smell your fear when I’m filming this.’ And I was like, ‘Well, if it works for this scene, it works for the scene.’”
Okay, so clearly Dr. Mohan’s mind was not on Dr. Abbot, but we’d still love to see more Abbot/Mohan team ups in the already confirmed second season of The Pitt.
