The MTV Video Music Awards, long seen on MTV and its sister cable outlets without a live broadcast component, will air on CBS for the first time in 2024, the network announced Thursday.
The show will air on CBS — and be “simulcast” on MTV, as the announcement puts it — from the UBS Arena on Sept. 7 at 8-11 p.m. ET/5-8 p.m. PT, live across time zones. The special will also be available for live viewing on Paramount+.
The shift is in line with other moves made by the networks recently, like the CMT Music Awards going out live for the first time on CBS in 2024 instead of CMT itself (although that special went on hiatus this year).
A one-hour pre-show will air live across Paramount Media Networks. CBS’ announcement suggested that MTV will be the only one of the Paramount networks to carry the live broadcast alongside CBS.
WIth last year’s VMAs, which did not air on CBS, the network crowed that the show delivered its biggest multi-network audience in four years and was “the most social VMAs in show history,” with 66.7 million social interactions measured.
WIth the show still being five months out from its air date, no other details, such as nominations, hosts or performers, have yet been announced, beyond the return to UBS Arena.
The 2025 show is being executive-produced by Bruce Gillmer and Den of Thieves co-founder Jesse Ignjatovic. Barb Bialkowski is the co-executive producer, with Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba set as executives in charge of production. Wendy Plaut is the executive in charge of celebrity talent, and Lisa Lauricella the executive in charge of music talent.
