John Oliver probably didn’t see this coming. The “Last Week Tonight” host appeared last week on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live,” where host Andy Cohen asked him about his kids’ TV diet. Oliver mentioned that “Bluey” and “Phineas and Ferb” are currently in heavy rotation at his house.
“Phineas and Ferb,” he raved, was “actually genuinely funny,” with “some good jokes in that.” But both Cohen and Oliver strangely didn’t know where “Phineas” actually runs — even though it’s been a Disney Channel staple since 2008. The best that Oliver could come up with: “I don’t know… PBS?”
Ooh, those are fighting words. “Phineas and Ferb” creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh weren’t having it. So the duo and their writers — currently working on the “Phineas” revival, set to drop this summer on Disney Channel and Disney+ — are humorously clapping back.
In what hopefully is the start of a new, gentle rap beef (sorry, Drake and Kendrick), Povenmire and Marsh wrote a rap and shot a video taking Oliver to task for not knowing where “Phineas” lives. But they end it with a request: How about making it up to them by providing a voice on the show? As they note, his “Daily Show” colleague Jon Stewart already has.
Oliver will likely soon notice: Povenmire has become quite a social media superstar, as he boasts nearly 8 million followers across TikTok and Instagram. And to sweeten the pot, “Phineas and Ferb” plans to deliver a large cutout of Perry the Platypus to Oliver’s office today, along with a save-the-date invite to the show’s upcoming premiere event.
Here’s the video:
Disney recently released the first trailer for its “Phineas and Ferb” revival, which returns to the small screen 10 years after the show’s original run came to a close. Back are voices Vincent Martella as Phineas Flynn, David Errigo Jr. as Ferb Fletcher, Ashley Tisdale as Candace Flynn, Caroline Rhea as Linda Flynn-Fletcher, Dee Bradley Baker as Perry the Platypus and Alyson Stoner as Isabella Garcia-Shapiro. Povenmire voices Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz while Marsh voices Major Francis Monogram.
According to the official logline, “the new season of ‘Phineas and Ferb’ will follow the inventive step-brothers as they tackle another 104 days of summer. Candace is more determined than ever to finally bust her little brothers while their pet platypus, Perry, continues to lead a double life as the suave Agent P, whose sole mission is to thwart Dr. Doofenshmirtz from taking over the Tri-State area.”
The first two episodes of “Phineas and Ferb” air on June 5 at 8 p.m. ET on Disney Channel and Disney XD. The first 10 episodes of the season will premiere on Disney+ in the U.S. and select international markets on June 6.
