During an interview with Harper’s Bazaar published Friday, the actress shared that her character Laurie’s child was “non-binary, maybe trans” and used they/them pronouns.
“You see Laurie struggling to explain it to her friends, struggling to use they/them pronouns, struggling with the language, which was all interesting,” Coon told the outlet.
The revelation would have also added more context to the tense political conversation in the third episode of Season 3 when Leslie Bibb’s character, Kate, hints she voted for Trump.
“It was only a short scene, but for me, it did make the question of whether Kate voted for Trump so much more provocative and personally offensive to Laurie, considering who her child is in the world,” Coon added.
The “Gilded Age” star, 44, explained that “White Lotus” creator Mike White decided to cut the scene considering the “cultural war against transgender people” after Trump was reelected.
“Mike felt that the scene was so small and the topic so big that it wasn’t the right way to engage in that conversation,” she said.
However, the “Gone Girl” actress went on to compliment White, who has won three Emmy Awards for his work on HBO’s “White Lotus.”
“Mike doesn’t shy away from challenging cultural conversations, and I really appreciate that about his work,” Coon said.
Bibb, 51, told Variety earlier this month that the timeliness was pure coincidence since White wrote the political scene in 2022.
“I feel like Mike had binoculars into the future because when we did it, it just didn’t feel [timely anymore],” Bibb explained to Entertainment Weekly in early March.
“I was like, ‘We already did that. That was in the past.’ I don’t even think Trump was running when we did it — it was in January or February of last year or something, so yeah, that was pretty wild.”
