Almost a fifth of people overspend on clothes due to their cluttered closest – these organisation tips will save you hundreds a year

  • New survey from Wren Bedrooms reveals that most people tidy their wardrobe just once a year.
  • Insights also reveal that almost a fifth buy extra clothes due to disorganised wardrobes and over a third can never find clothing to wear.

New data from Wren shares that many people in the UK aren’t decluttering their wardrobe enough, with most tidying up their bedroom storage just once a year1, with men being the worst culprits for mess.

The leading kitchen and bedroom retailer found that one in six men won’t touch their wardrobe for over two years, leaving clothes, shoes, and other household items to pile up.

This common habit appears to bother the nation, as terms around wardrobe organisation, such as ‘wardrobe organiser ideas’ and ‘clothes organiser’, see an average of 7,800 searches every month2.

Paul Richardson, Wren’s Stylist, claims that households should be re-organising their wardrobes every season to keep their space clean and clutter free, prioritising certain items depending on the season.

“Clothes, shoes and household items can get lost within larger wardrobe spaces, making it difficult to find what you need, slowing down your daily routine. As seasons change, different items become a priority, and so it’s important to refresh your storage spaces in line with the weather changes.”, Paul explains.

The average Brit is reported to spend £400 a year on clothing and footwear3, and so getting to grips with wardrobe organisation could save you hundreds of pounds.

Messy wardrobes mean many are spending more money than they need to on clothes and footwear. According to the survey, almost a fifth buy extra clothes due to disorganised storage.

Wren also shares that disorganised storage spaces cause almost one in five people anxiety, meaning a regular tidy will not only benefit your pocket, but your wellbeing too.

To get the nation organised and saving money, Paul shares his expert wardrobe and storage organisation tips.

  1. Curate Your Wardrobe with Love
Maintain a wardrobe filled only with clothes you absolutely love and have worn in the past year. Seasonal rotation is key – pack away off-season items to free up space and keep only those pieces that reflect your current style and comfort.
  2. Choose the Right Hangers
Maximise closet space by using slimline hangers for everyday clothing. Reserve bulkier wooden hangers for heavy coats or suits. This simple swap can open up more space and give your wardrobe a sleek, organised look.
  3. Organise Clothes by Size
Stack your clothes in categories, such as t-shirts, jeans, jumpers, in separate piles from largest to smallest, with the biggest on the bottom and the smallest on the top. This not only looks clean but also makes it easy to see and grab the garment you need.
