Skip the squats and forget the pricey BBL: Skims’ butt-enhancing shapewear just might be the easiest way to plump to your rump.
When Kim Kardashian announced her billion-dollar shapewear brand was launching a line of shorts, bodysuits and other sleek styles that would “magically make your dream butt appear,” shoppers snatched them up in mere minutes — but not before I was lucky enough to score a pair of $118 leggings from the line.
Billed as “a butt lift in a legging,” the pants were impressively constructed — on par with a similarly priced pair of lululemon leggings I own — and the mid-level compression fabric helps smooth your waist and thighs. And while I find that many Skims styles run small, these didn’t; my usual size small fit perfectly.
But my initial reaction upon pulling them on? I felt a bit like I was wearing a diaper. I’ve never worn any sort of booty-enhancing shapewear before, so I had to make sure the pads were situated properly on my backside — definitely a unique experience.
But was my boosted booty believable? It was time to put these leggings to the test on the streets of NYC. I headed out to Times Square, one of the most populated areas in Manhattan, to see if my enhanced derrière would turn heads.
There were a few double takes, some “wows” and several creepy peeks, which I’m sure were also brought on by my exaggerated lunges and stretches in the middle of the street. Anything for a reaction!
Unfortunately, the more I walked around, the more I found myself having to continuously pull up the leggings and situate the butt pads. That was pretty annoying, and something that I rarely ever have to do with a regular pair of workout pants.
Overall, considering these leggings are priced at well over $100, I would have expected them to stay in place without having to hike them up every few steps.
Perhaps I should’ve sized down — although the way they fit my body while I was standing in place was perfect, which makes me think the slippage might not be an issue with the collection’s shorts and bodysuits.
I also noticed that if you look super closely, you can see the outline of the pants’ padding. I would definitely prefer a more seamless appearance, because the last thing I would want is for someone to know that my curves were counterfeit.
Pros:
High quality
True to size
Lifts and rounds your rear
Inclusive size range (XXS to 4X)
Cons:
Outline of butt padding is visible if you look very closely
Leggings slipped down intermittently
As for whether I’d buy something else from Skims’ Ultimate Butt collection (if it weren’t mostly sold out, that is)? Probably not. But as a proud owner of a few Skims bras, I’d definitely shop the brand’s other offerings — and will continue to support my “fairy butt mother,” Kim K.
