1. The Philosophy of Zen Gardens and the Art of Interpretation

In her 2014 book Japanese Zen Gardens, Yoko Kawaguchi reveals the unique and inimitable nature of each Zen garden, emphasizing that understanding these spaces requires a Zen state of mind. This philosophy of abstraction and personal interpretation has inspired the renowned Swedish acoustics brand BAUX in their latest collection, X-FELT. Drawing from the serene harmony and open-ended symbolism of Zen gardens, this collection embodies the idea that design should be both functional and thought-provoking. Just as Zen gardens invite contemplation and reflection, X-FELT encourages users to engage with its intricate patterns and meanings on a deeply personal level.

2. The Collaboration and Design Process

The X-FELT collection is the result of a creative collaboration between BAUX and the international design studio Form Us With Love. Each piece in this collection is meticulously designed with precision-cut patterns that can be mixed and matched to create dynamic visual and acoustic effects. The collection includes large-format acoustic panels (1 x 2.8 meters) and tiles (6 x 6 meters), offering flexibility in application for both walls and ceilings. Co-founder of Form Us With Love, John Löfgren, aptly describes the series as "zenseful acoustics," blending the principles of Zen with advanced acoustic functionality.

3. Sustainability and Material Innovation

At the heart of the X-FELT collection is a commitment to sustainability and innovation. The panels and tiles are made from ultra-fine, high-quality polyester fibers sourced from GRS-certified PET, ensuring a reduced environmental footprint. Unlike traditional acoustic materials, X-FELT eliminates the need for harmful fire-retardant treatments, significantly lowering the risk of toxic emissions during production, use, and disposal. The advanced PET fiber structure uses a layered sandwich construction technique, resulting in smooth, lightweight, and long-lasting acoustic solutions. These materials are not only eco-friendly but also fully recyclable through specialized PET facilities or BAUX’s take-back program, BAUX Circle.

4. Aesthetic and Functional Harmony

The X-FELT collection is as visually striking as it is functional. Its design features intersecting curvilinear lines that create structured yet flowing geometric compositions, evoking the tranquil yet dynamic essence of Zen gardens. The patterns are available in a rich palette of solid and contrasting duo colors, offering a versatile aesthetic that complements a wide range of spaces. Each panel and tile contains mirrored and rotated variations of the same motif, creating symmetrical arches and wave-like curves that interlock seamlessly. This design approach generates a sense of movement, drawing the eye across the surface while maintaining a sense of calm. The panels are also fire-rated (Class Bs1-d0), ensuring safety without compromising on style or performance.
