A popular island in Spain has introduced a new ‘pay and display’ system for sunbeds on its most crowded beaches.Tourists heading to Gran Canaria will now have to use the system if they want to rent sun loungers or parasols on El Perchel, Puerto Rico or Playa de Mogán, and only have cash on them.Launched last Friday, the service works like a parking meter, requiring visitors to use the machine, select the item they want to use, and pay.The machine will then print out a ticket, which the customer must keep hold of while using their sunbed and umbrella. If a beachgoer has a bank card to hand, rather than cash, they don’t have to use the pay-and-display service.Instead, they can still go to the attendants and use one of their card machines to pay for their beach accessories.Willy García, from Mogan Town Council, told Canarian Weekly: ‘Until now, payment has only been available by card due to security concerns.’However, many beachgoers have been requesting the option to pay in cash.
