The Canary Islands has declared a red weather alert for the holiday hotspots of Tenerife and La Palma as a massive storm approaches the region. Effective from midnight tonight to Thursday, the islands’ government declared the maximum alert for strong winds in response to Storm Nuria, while placing the other islands on a general alert. Schools across Tenerife and La Palma will be closed on Thursday to protect children from the ‘extraordinary danger’ the storm poses. Tourists, meanwhile, have been warned to close their doors and windows to avoid property damage.   According to AEMET, Spain’s weather agency, strong west and southwesterly winds are set to sweep across the island, intensifying as the sun rises. Tenerife and La Palma are set to experience hurricane-force gusts of up to 80mph, with the possibility of even greater speeds. High-altitude regions of the islands, like La Palma’s Teide National Park, are expected to be hit the hardest. Elsewhere, El Hierro, La Gomera, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote are expecting winds of up to 60mph. The seas around the island are also expected to become rough as Nuria approaches, with the waters around  La Palma, El Hierro, Fuerteventura expected to reach heights of up to 16ft. It comes weeks after Tenerife was hit with a blast of snow, following a bout of heavy rain that sparked flash floods that swept through the popular holiday hotspots.
