The very first James Bond movie poster has sold for nearly £17,000 at auction.
The Dr No poster, which was among a collection of tatty, old and rare film posters to go under the hammer last week, fetched an incredible £16,900. Experts had expected it to go for around £8,000.
The poster from the 1962 film was 30 inches by 40 inches and featured Sean Connery and his co-stars in the movie. The iconic image came from the estate of a film projectionist in the north of England. The auction house description said the poster had light damage, splits in the paper, corner pin holes and a number in marker on the back of it.
Other rare Bond, Carry On, Beatles and Jaws movie posters fetched up to three times their estimated price.
Another 007 movie poster from Connery’s 1965 film Thunderball was estimated to sell at £2,000, but eventually went for an astonishing £6,240.
A You Only Live Twice poster, from the third Bond movie released in 1967, went for nearly three times its estimated £1,500 price tag. A collector bought it for £4,420.
The posters were part of a collection of 460 being sold off by Ewbanks auction house in Woking, Surry.
A poster from The Beatles 1965 movie Help! was estimated to sell for £500, but that was bought for £1,820.
An iconic Carry On Spying movie poster from the 1964 film was expected to go for £500 and that fetched a remarkable £1,560.
One from the 1975 Hollywood blockbuster Jaws sold for £494 – still three times the £150 estimate.
