Netflix customers watching series and movies on TVs can now toggle among the 30-plus languages available in the streamer’s catalog for dubs and subtitles. Until now, when watching Netflix on TV, you could only choose from a handful of languages (including the language you’ve selected as the default), whereas on mobile devices and web browsers the full complement of languages has been available. Previously, Netflix has shown 5-7 relevant languages on TVs and TV-connected streaming devices based on your location and language settings.

Starting April 2, Netflix customers worldwide will be able to select from the full list of available subtitle and dubbing languages for any title when watching on TV. According to Netflix it’s a “much-anticipated feature,” with thousands of customers submitting language availability requests each month. You can also select to watch a title with dubbing in one language and subtitles in another (as shown in the Netflix video below featuring a clip from Shonda Rhimes’ hit “Bridgerton”).

According to Netflix, nearly one-third of all viewing on the services is of non-English shows and films. Among its most popular TV and film titles of all time are “Squid Game” (Korea), “Berlin” (Spain), “Lupin” (France), “Who Killed Sara?” (Mexico), “Troll” (Norway) and Oscar-winner “All Quiet on the Western Front” (Germany). The full multi-language update for streaming on TVs “helps break down language barriers, making our global catalog even more accessible,” the company says.

According to Netflix, customers also say they use the streaming service to learn a foreign language because of the dozens of languages available. To that end, it offers additional features to support language learning, including the ability to customize subtitles and the ability to browse by language on PCs.

Across its entire catalog, Netflix currently support 33 subtitle languages and 36 dubbing languages.

Netflix offers content with subtitles in the following languages: Arabic, Basque, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Filipino, Finnish, French, French Canadian, Galician, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

Dubbed Netflix titles are available in these languages: Arabic, Basque, Bengali, Cantonese, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Filipino, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Malayalam, Mandarin, Marathi, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.
