If you’re dreaming of a winter break exploring Christmas markets or ice-skating in the park, the last thing you want is to be bogged down by bulky baggage. “We all know the struggle of trying to stuff those extra layers into our carry-on, desperate not to pay a baggage fee,” says packing expert Wayne Mills, the Head of Operations at Seven Seas Worldwide.

That’s where Wayne’s smart packing hacks come into play. Below, Wayne shows you how to maximize space in your carry-on so you can stay warm and stylish with just one bag.

  1. Rollin’ With The Best!

Say goodbye to old-school folding! Imagine this: instead of a chaotic pile of sweaters filling your bag to the brim, you have perfectly rolled outfits that save space and look fabulous.

“The key is to fold your clothes until they form a rectangle, then roll,” says Wayne. “For a t-shirt, for example, you would lay it out flat, fold in the arms, fold it in half, then start rolling. This technique keeps your clothes wrinkle-free and lets you get a whole load more stuff in your bag.”

  1. Squeeze The Day

Compression bags allow you to vacuum the air out of the bag, reducing heavy jackets and sweaters to a fraction of their size. This will give your winter wear a leaner look so you can fit more into your carry-on.

  1. Layer Up, Buttercup!

Instead of weighing down your bag, wear your heaviest layers on the flight. Get in the mood for your winter break by wearing your cozy coat and stylish boots to the airport. Not only will you save valuable carry-on space, but when you arrive at your destination, you’ll be ready to face the winter chill!

  1. Mix And Match Magic

When packing for a winter holiday, choose pieces that can serve multiple functions or be styled in several different ways. “For example, add a coat and hat to a stylish long-sleeved dress for a daytime look, then change it to an evening ensemble with a smart bag and a piece of jewelry,” says Wayne. Choose lightweight fabrics like merino wool or fleece that can be layered without weighing you down.

  1. Clothes, Cubed

Grab yourself a set of packing cubes to organize your carry-on! These handy little organizers are not only cute but also super functional. You can divide your bag into color-coded cubes: thermal layers in one, casual outfits in another, and accessories in a third.

“This will let you pull out the perfect outfit for the day without rummaging through your entire bag,” says Wayne.

  1. Up Your Shoe Game

Winter shoes can be hefty, but with a little strategy, you can keep your packing light. Limit yourself to one pair of stylish boots and a lightweight pair of flats or sneakers for indoor adventures. Wear the boots on the flight and stuff your other pair of shoes with cozy socks or small items like chargers to maximize every inch of space in your bag.

  1. Downsizing Down Jackets

When it comes to winter jackets, opt for down or packable options. These incredible pieces are lightweight and compress into tiny bundles when not in use. You’ll be warm, snug, and ready to tackle winter adventures, all while keeping your carry-on as light as a feather. A win-win for sure!

  1. Ziploc Magic!

Don’t underestimate the power of Ziploc bags. You can use them to store small items like gloves, hats, and chargers, keeping your carry-on organized and compact.

Wayne Mills, the Head of Operations at Seven Seas Worldwide, commented:

“Traveling in winter can be just as magical as a summer getaway, but it comes with the same worries about baggage fees, delays, and lost luggage. That’s why strategically packing everything you need into your carry-on is such a great idea; it lets you avoid the hassle of long waits at the carousel and streamlines your travel experience.

“Being organized and intentional about what you bring means you won’t have the stress of traveling with bulky bags while knowing you have everything you need. Keeping your bag light also lets you avoid that stressful scramble for space in the overhead bins once you get onto the plane, as you can just slip your bag under the seat in front. Not to mention, your compact packing will impress your traveling companions – and if you pack really smart, you can make room for souvenirs!”
