BBC Studios Productions announced on Friday that its Chief Operating Officer, Martha Brass, will be leaving her position this summer. Brass, who joined the company in September 2021, is stepping away to focus on her growing portfolio of non-executive directorships and personal interests. Her departure marks the end of a transformative period at BBC Studios, during which she played a crucial role in shaping the company’s future.

Martha Brass’s time at BBC Studios was nothing short of impactful. She joined during a period of significant change and quickly became a key figure in the organization. In March 2024, following the exit of former CEO Ralph Lee, Brass took on the responsibility of overseeing the production business until Zai Bennett was appointed as the new CEO and Chief Creative Officer in November of the same year. Her leadership during this transition was instrumental in maintaining stability and continuity within the company. Brass’s tenure also saw the company undergo a major strategic reorganization in 2022, which merged the Productions and Content Partnerships divisions into a single, unified content outfit. This restructuring was designed to streamline creative and investment decisions, and it laid the groundwork for the company’s future success.

Under Brass’s operational leadership, BBC Studios Productions expanded its reach through several strategic acquisitions and investments. These included the acquisition of Voltage TV in the U.K., STV in the Nordics, Werner in Australia, and Brutal in Spain. Additionally, the company made minority investments in Turbine, Mothership, Mettlemouse, and most recently, Samphire Films. These moves not only broadened the company’s global footprint but also demonstrated Brass’s commitment to growth and innovation. She also played a key role in commercializing Children’s and Audio content after these divisions were transferred from the BBC’s public service arm, further diversifying the company’s portfolio and opening up new revenue streams.

Martha Brass’s contributions to BBC Studios extend beyond her professional achievements. She is also known for her passion for golf, a hobby that has led to her involvement in several high-profile roles within the sport. In October 2024, she made history by becoming the first female chair of England Golf, the national governing body for the sport. Brass also serves as a non-executive director of the PGA European Tour, chair of PGA European Tour Productions, and a non-executive director of the British Golf Association. Her dedication to golf is just one example of her commitment to excellence and leadership outside of her professional career. Earlier this year, she completed her three-year term on the board of Screen Skills Limited, further showcasing her dedication to the broader creative industry.

Before joining BBC Studios, Martha Brass had already built an impressive career in international television. She held executive roles at some of the biggest names in the industry, including Pearson Television (now Fremantle Limited), 19 Entertainment, Endemol Shine Group, and Newen Studios. Her work during this time included collaborating with production teams behind global hit formats like “American Idol,” “Big Brother,” and “Masterchef.” Her extensive experience and deep understanding of the industry were instrumental in her success at BBC Studios and earned her a reputation as a visionary leader.

As Martha Brass prepares to embark on her next chapter, she leaves behind a legacy of growth and innovation at BBC Studios. Zai Bennett, CEO and Chief Creative Officer of BBC Studios, praised her contributions, saying, “I’d like to thank Martha for her stewardship of BBC Studios Productions last year and the support she has shown me since I joined. Her legacy is one of a laser-focused, tireless desire to champion the business at the most senior level whilst ensuring that everyone across the production family is set up and supported to deliver their very best work. I wish her all the best for the future.” Tom Fussell, CEO of BBC Studios, added, “It’s been such a great pleasure working with and getting to know Martha in her time at BBC Studios. The energy and passion she brought to the business has been immense, and she’s been an important part of our growth story. We send her on to her next endeavors with great affection and thanks.”

Reflecting on her time at BBC Studios, Brass expressed her gratitude and pride in the company’s accomplishments during her tenure. “I couldn’t have closed my more than 25-year executive career in international television in a better place than BBC Studios,” she said. “The business has grown significantly, delivering fantastic programming to audiences around the world and growing its investment and dividend contributions to the BBC. I’m proud to have been a part of that growth and to have worked with brilliant colleagues who share the values, passion, and ambition that underscore the worldwide reputation of the BBC.” As she moves on to new challenges and pursuits, Martha Brass leaves behind a legacy of leadership, innovation, and dedication that will undoubtedly continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps.
