David Tennant and Meera Syal have joined the roster of guest artists for Tim Crouch’s groundbreaking play “An Oak Tree,” which celebrates its 20th anniversary at London’s Young Vic this spring.
The unique theatrical experiment, which pioneered the concept of the “cold-read,” features a different guest performer in every show who has neither seen nor read the play before stepping on stage. The production, presented by Olivier Award-winning Francesca Moody Productions (behind global hits “Fleabag” and “Baby Reindeer”) in association with the Young Vic, marks two decades since the play’s debut.
Tennant (“Dr Who,” “Macbeth”) and Syal (“A Tupperware of Ashes,” “Goodness Gracious Me”) join newly revealed performers including Alfred Enoch (“The Critic,” “How to Get Away With Murder”), Lorraine Ashbourne (“Alma’s Not Normal,” “Sherwood”), Eddie Marsan (“Vera Drake,” “Back to Black”), and Nina Sosanya (“The Other Place,” “Baby Reindeer”).
These actors complement the previously announced lineup featuring Adjoa Andoh (“Bridgerton,” “Richard II”), Jessie Buckley (“The Lost Daughter,” “Cabaret”), Arthur Darvill (“Broadchurch,” “Oklahoma!”), Sọpẹ́ Dìrísù (“Gangs of London,” “Slow Horses”), Mark Gatiss (“The League of Gentlemen,” “The Motive and the Cue”), Julie Hesmondhalgh (“Mr Bates vs The Post Office,” “Punch”), Michelle Terry (“Tribes,” “The Cafe”), Alex Lawther (“The End of the F***ing World,” “Black Mirror”), Luke Thompson (“Bridgerton,” “A Little Life”), Russell Tovey (“Being Human,” “American Horror Story: NYC”) and Indira Varma (“Game of Thrones,” “Present Laughter”).
In keeping with the production’s tradition, each guest artist will only be revealed to audiences as they step onto the stage on the night of their performance.
Written, performed and co-directed by Crouch, the play tells the story of a father who loses his daughter in a car accident. The driver responsible turns out to be a stage hypnotist, and the two men meet when the father volunteers for the hypnotist’s act. Since its 2005 premiere, over 350 different guest artists have appeared in the production across 19 countries, including Frances McDormand, Geoffrey Rush, Sharon D Clarke, Alanis Morrissette, Sophie Okonedo and Peter Dinklage.
“An Oak Tree” is directed by Tim Crouch, Karl James and Andy Smith, with music by Peter Gill. It runs at London’s Young Vic theater May 6-24.
